A potentially cool thing

Dan went out in the field and woods yesterday to look for apples. It's been a huge year for apples. The trees out front were loaded, and the quality was high--even the wretched Yellow Transparents (the ones I always wonder why the original folks here would have chosen to include that variety in their orchard) were tolerable this year. And in the woods he has found wild apples, excellent ones, some the size of softballs! It's pretty amazing.

But the cool thing is--he found grapes! Tons of grapes! He thinks someone may have had a vineyard out there at some point. But there have never been grapes! These are tiny not-ripe-yet Concord types with the giant seeds--but they are grapes with a beautiful color, and there are apparently a lot of them.

This is cool because I was under the impression that grapes just wouldn't grow around here. Not because of the climate, since there are varieties that do grow this far north and farther, and because I knew folks who had wild (or perhaps feral :)) grapes below the bridge in the next county over, but possibly because of the soil. I know my mom and dad have tried several times with no luck. However, if there is a possibility of growing grapes...I can try to put together a grape arbor! Woo-hoo!
