My local grocery-store-of-choice has been remodeling. It is my store-of-choice because it isn't too big and I know where everything is, thereby facilitating quick trips for a needed item or two. They've expanded, and currently have a lot of empty shelves as they move things around--their produce section is about three times what it used to be (not a big consideration because we generally get our produce at the somewhat-less-local natural foods co-op). It looks like they're keeping things in about the same order, which is good.

But they are doing that thing I hate. You know how, in some grocery stores, usually larger ones, you go in the door, and to the left are the cash registers, and to the right is a long, long path with mostly nonessential "we hope you'll buy this on impulse even though no one actually needs it" things, leading to usually the apples and oranges and potatoes? And you have to take this long path because there's no other damn way into the store?

This is intentional, I'm told by my beloved husband, because studies show that the more of the store you have to go through, the more likely you are to buy stuff you weren't planning to. And when a store is set up like that--no short cuts possible--you have to go through a lot of store.

But so much for the quick in-and-out "I just need bread and milk" trips.

And if I have to find another store-of-choice for my quick trips, I'm also going to find one for my usual shopping.

Damn it, I don't want to have to learn the lay of the land in a new store.

I learned in a class at culinary school, the psychology behind grocery store layout. It was interesting and what you are saying is true. There is a reason the milk is all the way in the back of the store.

Sounds like a tip I recently read about grocery shopping--only shop along the edges and avoid the aisles. They usually have foods you shouldn't be eating.
