I'm not in a tree anymore

A few weeks ago I was talking to a friend, and she said that humans clench their fists as a reaction to perceived threats--not as in getting ready to punch someone, but as a behavioral remnant from our days in the trees when holding onto branches could be a lifesaver. That it's a comfort thing.

And it's true that under stress I do tend to hold my hands in fists. I knew this because one of the things I do to destress is to unclench my fists. It goes along with counting my breaths (one, two, three, four).

So it makes me wonder about what other outdated survival mechanisms there might be that really don't serve our best interests anymore.
